Thankfulness at work

Just in time for Thanksgiving, let's look at some ways you can be more thankful at work to reinforce the behaviors you want from employees, your manager, co-workers, suppliers, and customers.

1. Show appreciation to staff: Creating a positive and motivational work climate begins with building on positives. Managers should comment on ten positives for every negative comment. Because a majority of people seek attention, they will get that attention any way they can. If they know that their manager only notices negatives, they will behave that way to get attention from the manager. If the entire management team behaves that way, the culture will become negative and productivity will decline. Even though employees are paid to be at work, the manager should regularly say thank you for the contribution the employees make to success.

2. Show appreciation to co-workers: We spend more time with those we work with than we do with our families. Go out of your way to say thank you when other people help you out. It will reinforce those positive behaviors and support a positive atmosphere.

3. Show appreciation to your manager: You've heard the saying it's lonely at the top. If you think you don't receive enough praise, it gets even worse in management! When your manager does something you appreciate, tell him or her about it and you will get more of the same behavior in the future. If you give no feedback, then your manager will not know which behaviors to emphasize. And because managers crave attention as much as anyone else, you can help shape his or her behavior to be more positive.

4. Show appreciation to your customers: This seems like common sense and yet it is amazing to see employees and managers complaining about customers and the demands they make. Recognize that the customer is why you get a paycheck. We should thank our customers when they behave well, and thank them for the opportunity to solve a problem they have.

5. Show appreciation to your suppliers: It has become common practice recently to beat up on suppliers when we need them more than ever to achieve outstanding success. Suppliers are a crucial part of your company's success and saying thank you will maintain a positive working relationship especially when you need them to come through for you in a pinch.

6. Show appreciation to your family and friends: Okay, so this one may not be as work related as the others and yet if work gets you stressed out, you need your family and friends even more. And the opposite is also true; if your family and friends cause you stress it will likely show in your work. So remember to reinforce the kinds of behaviors you want to see in your family and friends and you will attract more positives into your life.
