How To Choose The Right Logistics Leadership Training

Home » How To Choose The Right Logistics Leadership Training

The truth is that people do not always learn the same way and participating in any form of training will not be as effective regardless of where it comes from.

Furthermore, 70% of learning does not even happen in a classroom. It occurs in the day-to-day experiences that your team members have on the shop floor. They learn on the job. But did you know that 20% of your learning comes from feedback and greater self-awareness, and 10% comes from formal training?

Achieving Long-Term Results With Training

An equipment manufacturer partnered with us to train their supervisors. Initially, they wanted us to cover many topics in the first wave of training. We obliged that by doing a consolidated program in a reasonably intensive format.

To ensure that the lessons were effective, our recommendation to this business was to incorporate the tools that had been taught and connect them to the daily work supervisors implement on the shop floor. Doing this would help them put into practice the conversations they would have after the training program.

By focusing on specific challenges that the supervisors were experiencing and demonstrating how to put those strategies into practice, the training became more valuable to those recipients. This approach increased the likelihood of long-term positive changes because it was put into action.

Choosing The Right Leadership Training

Here are a few guidelines to consider when choosing leadership training for logistics leaders.

Number One: Focus On The Essentials

Leadership training can include many optional topics, and there are always buzzword topics companies are interested in having their people learn. But when you really think about it, the essential issues focus on:

  • How to communicate and interact respectfully.
  • How to motivate, especially when working with multiple generations.
  • How to mitigate and deal with conflict situations constructively.

Number Two: Practice Real-Life Scenarios

Most participants would tell you that role-playing and practicing is the most daunting part of leadership training. It does not seem practical from their perspective. By giving them a real-life scenario, they can see the results of those lessons and the direct benefits (or recognize adjustments) to improve the workplace.

Number Three: Apply And Share The Success

Inevitably, some team members will better grasp new leadership capabilities more quickly than others. When this happens, get them together, even in small groups, and have them share how they have been able to apply the training content.

This approach can help motivate those beside them who might be more reluctant to try it. But when they hear their colleagues say how great it worked for them, they will be even more inspired and motivated to try those new things.

This is something we measure ourselves, using our state-of-the-art leadership or leader behavior builder system, where people set commitments to put specific ideas into action. If the supervisors or managers of those participants have conversations with them, they can help pollinate and propagate that learning to other people.
