Give Thanks to Your Team

How can you give thanks to your team?

As our friends in the United States celebrate their Thanksgiving later this week, I thought it would be great to talk about simply giving thanks to your team. I think we can go further than simply saying thanks.

To do this, I would like to share a simple three-step model, called the BET model:

B stands for behavior.

What did the person do that you really appreciated? If you are specific about that, then that person knows that what they did made a difference.

E stands for the effect.

What was the impact of what they did? How did it affect production? How did it affect you? How did it affect others? Did it help the customer?

T stands for thank you.

Thank them for their behavior and the effect that it caused.

An example of how you would use this model is by saying, “Thanks for helping them out in the other department. They were shorthanded and you helped them catch up. And because of that, they were really appreciative. Thank you for doing that.”

It is a simple way of offering praise. Not only does it build goodwill in your department, but it actually builds up the emotional bank account of your team members so that if you need to correct something in the future, you have actually built up some credits through all the praise and positive feedback that you have given.

Now, learning this simple tool might quench your thirst immediately but also make you thirsty for learning more. That can be done through our Front Line Leadership Training, either virtually or in-person.

No matter how we can help you, it always starts with a conversation.
